2015 Activities

Our 50th Anniversary was celebrated on December 6, 2014 at the Pacific Beach Hotel with family, friends, supporters, and kamaʻāina of the Kona moku. It was a beautiful time to celebrate our accomplishments, to meet our scholarship recipients, and to install our new board for Waikīkī HCC. We are so thankful for the kupuna who founded the club in 1964 and committed their time and aloha to setting the foundation of our club. We honored Aunty Nona Kamai, one of our dedicated and longest serving members.

Aunty Nona Kamai passed away peacefully in her home on July 21, 2015. She was a lifelong member of the ʻAhahui ʻo Kaʻahumanu, Hale o Nā Aliʻi, and the Waikīkī HCC and was also a member of ʻEwa Puʻuloa Hawaiian Civic Club. Aunty Nona also served on the Oʻahu District Council of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. Aunty Nona is survived by her sons, David lkaika and Devin lliki Kamai; daughters, Dwynn Leialoha and Dana Kaleo Kamai; grand- daughter, Cheyane Haunani Kamai; sisters, Marilyn (George) Cabatic, Gilberta (Larry) Limasa, Myrna (Marshall) Colbert and Cherle (Kimo) Kaholokula; brothers, Herman Meyer and Archie Tanabe; hānai ‘ohana, Liane Davidson, Paulette Kahana, Kaleo Akim Hanohano, Charmaine Silva, Julie-Beth Ako and Father Bob Stark; many nieces and nephews. Aunty Nona was preceded in death by her husband, Heine lkaika Kamai; sister, Nellie Tanabe and brother, Gilbert Nobrega.

On July 12, we participated in one of our annual kōkua at Maunaʻala. We enjoy spending time at Maunaʻala and doing the little we can to mālama this special wahi pana of our ʻiwi kupuna.

On September 6, Waikīkī HCC was excited to participate in the ʻOnipaʻa Festival at ʻIolani Palace in honor of our Queen Liliʻuokalani. We participated as a food vendor and this year we tried a different menu that included Kiaʻaina Katering specials- Beef Stew, Smoked Meat, and a Waikīkī Poke Salad. It was a pleasure for our club to provide ʻaipono options for all that attended this festival.

Our club is a small club however, we are very active at all levels of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and we remain committed to working with our civic club ʻohana for another 50 years. We are pīhoihoi to attend the 56th annual convention in Lahaina, Maui and mahalo the Maui Council for their hana nui.
